Summary: At the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, archaeological research in local communities (in the Urals and Volga regions) was largely driven by uncoordinated efforts of single enthusiasts. During the 60s of the 20th century, the first generation of local researchers came into being. In the 70s and 80s, new local research centers started to develop at the nascent classical universities in Samara, Volgograd, Chelyabinsk, Izhevsk and Yoshkar-Ola. During the Perestroika years, no funding was provided for local archaeological studies, which caused much damage to them. Today, with new developments in archaeological research, we are confronted with new challenges and new ways of tackling those challenges.
